Hidden Heroes

At CHH we’re very proud of the people who work for us and understand that our success depends on them. We decided to shine a light on some of our amazing employees to learn more about their roles, experiences and aspirations.
In the second of our Day in the Life series, we are talking to Mechanical Engineer Ashley Perrins. Ashley works in our Design, Engineering & Manufacturing Division which specialises in the production of integrated systems, enclosures, active cabinet solutions and cable and loom assemblies for a broad range of industries.
How long have you been with CHH?
I joined the business in 2020 as a higher level Manufacturing Engineering Principles apprentice. Covid really prolonged my training which was completed in 2022, but CHH offered me a fantastic opportunity to develop my skills in a fast-growing organisation. The integrated cable design and cabinet work provided me with just the challenge I was looking for and I’ve never looked back.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
It’s the fact that no two days are the same. The Design, Engineering & Manufacturing Division is always busy. One moment I am helping maintain a machine and the next I’m asked to wire a control panel or helping with cable assembly builds. I love that challenge.
How has your role changed over time?
As time has gone by, I’ve been given more responsibility and I’m getting involved with some really interesting project work for our key customers. I get to understand their issues and find solutions and it’s that problem solving side of the role that I find the most rewarding. The work here is so varied and there is always something new around the corner. It means that you are learning all the time.
Describe a typical working day.
I might start the day responding to a customer query and tackling an engineering issue for them. Sometimes that involves me going out into the field to provide support. Next, I could be working on an alarm design or helping production with a change of part. A lot of my work involves supporting continuous improvement and I might spend the afternoon researching a new project for one of our customers or working out how to improve on a design. It’s very satisfying when you can solve a problem they’ve been grappling with for a long time, and you get a pat on the back for your efforts.
Where would you like your role to take you in the future?
I would like to continue developing that wide range of skills and continue the problem solving work. The harder the problem the better as far as I’m concerned. I see myself having a long term career here. There are so many opportunities and I’m excited about what the next few years have in store. I work with a great team of people at CHH and the business is always encouraging you to stretch yourself to fulfil your potential.
What does your manager have to say?
Liz Scott, Managing Director, Design, Engineering & Manufacturing Division
I have seen Ashley develop massively over the last couple of years both in terms of his capabilities and confidence. He is the go-to person for problem solving and seems to relish it. He is very hands on and likes to throw himself into the task, asking the right questions and coming up with practical solutions. Ashley recently came with us to represent CHH at the Connected Britain event and really rose to the challenge of engaging with people and showcasing our offer. It’s a pleasure to have him on my team.
