CHH’s Emily Knight has completed the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. The qualification will support Emily in her role as Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) Administrator and provide her with the skills to effectively mitigate risks across the organisation. She is already applying her knowledge to help ensure compliance and embed robust safety management systems.
At CHH we are committed to investing in staff training and development to build skillsets and ensure we have the knowhow we need to meet our goals. Creating a safe working environment is a top priority and is aligned with our sustainability strategy. According to the Health and Safety Executive, workplace injuries and ill health cost UK businesses more than £15 billion per year and as a responsible employer we take our duty of care very seriously.
As part of our drive for continual improvement, we identified an opportunity to improve our credentials by enrolling Emily in the NEBOSH certificate. The internationally respected qualification is designed to develop a range of skills including identifying and controlling common workplace hazards and understanding the UK’s key health and safety regulations.
Emily joined CHH in July 2021, taking responsibility for managing the administrative tasks related to CHH’s SHEQ system. She has been keen to take on more responsibility and the NEBOSH course gave her the opportunity to take a deep dive into managing health and safety risks.
“I learned so much over the two week course,” said Emily. “Before being examined on the theory I undertook a practical risk assessment in the workplace. That involved looking at our warehouse operations and identifying the risks and mitigations needed to ensure it is a safe working environment.”
Alongside six other delegates, Emily was guided through the process of hazard identification, risk evaluation, and the implementation of control measures. She will now continue to support our SHEQ Manager Sarah Sherwood in embedding best practice and maintaining our impressive health and safety record.
Emily added: “It is great to work for a business that encourages you to keep developing and invests in your skills. Everyone has offered me support and encouragement. I was delighted to pass and I’m really looking forward to applying everything I have learned.”
