Smart meter scale up – How CHH’s connectivity solutions are helping drive energy efficiency

CHH has more than three decades of experience providing solutions that help connect the world for a more sustainable future. Our expertise in manufacturing and managed services has supported our partners delivering the first phase of smart meter installations across the UK’s homes and businesses. As the roll out continues, our team will play a key role in providing engineers with the connectivity products and consumables they need to support the drive to Net Zero.

The government has charged utility companies with the task of equipping domestic and commercial customers with smart meters. They form a key component of creating a smarter infrastructure and give users the information they need to track and reduce their energy consumption. Having that insight is critical in driving decarbonisation and meeting our obligations to cut emissions in the face of climate change.

CHH has earned a reputation as a trusted partner within the industry. Our Managed Services division has supported the sector by ensuring field engineers have the tools, consumables and personal protective equipment (PPE) required for rapid installation. Our next day delivery service provides peace of mind that they can get the job done effectively and efficiently.

Although around 60% of the UK’s homes are now smart meter enabled, there is still some way to go before we have full coverage. The government is determined to use smart meter adoption as a way of helping hit Net Zero and is working with utility companies to scale up the roll out.

Progress has been slower than it had hoped, and it has now set targets for suppliers to install smart meters in at least 74.5% of homes and nearly 69% of small businesses by the end of 2025. That will rely on providers having access to a network of trusted suppliers to provide them with the products and services they need. CHH has built a reputation as a partner of choice, and we will continue supporting our customers to develop a robust infrastructure.

Maintaining momentum

CHH is not only on hand to support with installations. Engineers will also have to spend a lot of time focusing on maintenance and repair. According to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, 4.3 million existing smart meters are not working properly. This is causing customers to be billed incorrectly and is a major challenge for those wanting to maximise the benefits of a smarter energy infrastructure.

CHH’s managed services team helps providers meet their targets for both maintenance and installation. Our rapid response service offer acts as a one-stop-shop for installers up and down the country. Every month the division is supplying 135,000-plus parts to more than 3,000 engineers, with an impressive OTIF (On Time In Full) of 99.54%.

New horizons

CHH is applying the experience gained through the smart roll out to support the growth of other sustainable sectors. We are for instance well placed to use our expertise for scaling up EV charge points and solar panel installation.

Whether it is applying our skills in design, engineering or shared services, we are passionate about using smart connectivity solutions to support the energy transition. It is a very exciting time to be operating within this space and there are huge opportunities to take this to the next level by supporting smart city development both in the UK and across the world.

Our comprehensive portfolio of solutions are designed to support the global shift to smart cities. CHH’s Networking, Cable & Connectivity Solutions division was set up to help accelerate the transition and our recent expansion into the Middle East ensures that we are at hand to feed into some of the world’s most ambitious projects.

According to the United Nations, smart, sustainable cities can use innovation to improve quality of life, efficiency of urban operation and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring they meet the needs of present and future generations.

Be it supporting smart meter, EV or solar roll out here in the UK, or providing smart connectivity solutions to support sustainable development on the global stage, CHH is ready to embrace the opportunities ahead.
